Opportunities, limits and methodology of lymph node ultrasonography: How to do it

W. J. Brauer
LymphForsch 22 (2) 2018;60-66

Summary
In addition to detecting the size, shape and gross structure of superficial lymph nod high-resolution ultrasonography allows numerous anatomy-related details to be detected. In this article we explain how to distinguish normal lymph nodes from reactive ones, from malignant lymphoma, and from metastatic lymph nodes. We also discuss the opportunities and limits of lymph node ultrasonography. We conclude that superficial lymph nodes can be easily assessed with ultrasonography. High-resolution B-mode ultrasonography combined with power-mode and/or color duplex ultrasonography makes an important contribution to distinguishing between benign and malignant lymph node diseases.

The adverse effects of sugar consumption – why we need to reduce it

A. C. Meyer-Gerspach, B. K. Wölnerhanssen
LymphForsch 22 (2) 2018;70-75

Summary
Excessive sugar consumption is related to a wide range of chronic diseases and affects several organ systems including the oral cavity (tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontitis), the cardiovascular system (arterial hypertension, cardiovascular morbidity and mortality), the liver (hepatic steatosis), energy balance and metabolism (obesity, metabolic syndrome with impaired glucose tolerance and/or diabetes, elevated blood lipids), the skin (accelerated skin aging), and the central nervous system (neurodegenerative diseases, e.g., Alzheimer’s). There is an urgent need to reduce sugar consumption. Sugar substitutes may help achieve this goal.
